Have you ever asked this question yourself? Have you ever thought ‘where does that sense of right and wrong come from?’
Maybe you question whether the conscience even exists, but we all know there is ‘something’ inside, even if we choose to ignore it.
The Bible gives us the answer.
It tells us that our conscience comes from God Himself! Every single person is made in the image of God (Gen 1:26-27). This means we have certain characteristics which God Himself has given to us.
One of the things God gave us is a ‘moral code’.
The Bible tells us that every man, woman and child has ‘the law written in their hearts’ (Rom 2:15). This is the moral code – the sense of right and wrong which God Himself put into our hearts and minds!
What does this mean?
It means you and I know it’s wrong to tell a lie, or steal a car, or commit murder, or swear, or be cruel to friends and family, or even to reject God and His ways.
Doesn’t this make us all guilty before God?
Which of us can honestly say we have never broken God’s law? The Bible calls this sin. Which of us can say that our conscience has never been violated? The answer is none.
That might seem like bad news, and it is. We are guilty and deserve punishment!
However, there is good news!
We each have a conscience for a reason, so that we might know we are guilty and seek the only One who can save us.
There is only one Person who was, and is, not guilty before God – the Son of God Himself, Jesus Christ.
He is the answer to our sin problem, to our guilty conscience, to the punishment we deserve!
He came not to condemn, ‘but that the world through Him might be saved’ (John 3:17). He came to save people who know they are guilty and want to be free.
Is that you? Is your conscience heavy? Are you feeling the weight of it?
Jesus says, ‘Come to Me’ (Matt 11:28) and He will set you free (John 8:32).
It seems so simple, and it is!
It requires you to admit you have a guilty conscience, confess your sins before God and believe in Jesus who died on the cross to pay for the sins of others.
Why wouldn’t you do that today? What is stopping you?
